Hi everyone,

Marcus Raine has organized a 12 player Round robin event in honour of the late Kon Raipalis. For those of you who didn't know Kon, he was one of those persons who was part of the heart and soul of the Melbourne Chess Club, and an integral part of the club's history. Not content with the many efforts he made on the club's behalf whilst he was still in employment, Kon spent his retirement years serving as a duty officer at the club, almost every day, and cleaned and maintained the club with very little fuss. He was not often praised as much as he richly deserved. His passing away left a gaping hole in the fabric of the club. The world became a poorer place when Kon passed, but heaven was no doubt made much richer by the same token. He died is his late 80's, but was a strong player his whole life, and maintained a standard that put him in the top 20 Victorian players until his demise prior to his death.

So here is the field, in seeding order, then the playing dates, then the pairings incorporating those games that have been played to date

The Tournament is to be FIDE rated and is being played at the time control of 90 mins + 30 seconds/move from move 1

Hello everyone,

by so far I mean so far as I know them, but will allow myself to conjecture on the two not confirmed results

firstly, what we know

1 Slobodan Krstic 2041 1837 [0] : Ascaro Pecori 2124 2064 [.5]
2 Thai Ly 2050 1859 [1.5] 0:1 Malcolm L Pyke 2151 2078 [2.5]
3 Michael Baron 2329 2290 [1] 1:0 Scott Stewart 1926 1704 [1]
4 Garry Lycett 1936 1842 [1] 0:1 Pano Skiotis 2171 2054 [1.5]
5 Milenko Rikalo 2011 1793 [1] 1:0 Sarah Anton 1718 1749 [1]
6 Domagoj Dragicevic 2251 2166 [2] : Tony J Davis 1983 1848 [1]

Secondly I believe Ascaro will win on board 1. He had a passed pawn on d2 which was supporting a rook on e1, and Bob was losing control of his back rank, and the queening square, when I left. Could probably reconstruct most of the position, but will not do so in case I have something very important wrong.

In Domagoj against Tony, only Domagoj can win.

The end position was something like W: Ke4, Nd3, P; h3, c4 and a2
B: Kh8, Be1, P; h7, c5, a6. and it was Tony's move but he couldn't save his c5 pawn and his bishop both, as if 1....Be1-b4 then 2. Nxb4 cxb4 3.c5 and the black king is outside the square. Domagoj also had about 11 mins to 5 mins when I left too, so very good chance of the win with the advanced white king helping the newly passed c pawn through, I guess.

ok well that is enough stories, will confirm them anyway, when I know

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Thx, Mac

I thought Ty was having big advantage against you in the endgame but may be i was wrong..or may be he stuffed it up.

Domagoi's game was dramatic too..he had big advantage, then missed a nice tactical trick by Tony and position became equal. I will see him tomorrow night at endgame group and ask him about the final result.

Sara vs. Rikalo..well this was even more dramatic...

Myself vs. Scott - Scott blundered a piece early.

As for the other two games....i think all the interesting events have taken place after i left already.

Hi Michael,

I can confirm my opinions on the two games in question as being correct, so here is a reprise of the Round 4 results

1 Slobodan Krstic 2041 1837 [0] 0:1 Ascaro Pecori 2124 2064 [.5]
2 Thai Ly 2050 1859 [1.5] 0:1 Malcolm L Pyke 2151 2078 [2.5]
3 Michael Baron 2329 2290 [2] 1:0 Scott Stewart 1926 1704 [1]
4 Garry Lycett 1936 1842 [1] 0:1 Pano Skiotis 2171 2054 [1.5]
5 Milenko Rikalo 2011 1793 [1] 1:0 Sarah Anton 1718 1749 [1]
6 Domagoj Dragicevic 2251 2166 [2] 1:0 Tony J Davis 1983 1848 [1]

As far as a big endgame advantage, I am unsure when you last saw the position, but it was an interesting game. I think there were a few keys things that didn't happen from Thai that could have complicated matters more. Eventually the clock started to be a big factor, as at a certain point Thai lost a pawn, and whilst trying to figure out what to do about it, he used up a lot of his remaining time, which always makes it awkward.

And here are the pairings for the next round on Monday 20/07/09

1 Tony J Davis 1983 1848 [1] : Slobodan Krstic 2041 1837 [0]
2 Sarah Anton 1718 1749 [1] : Domagoj Dragicevic 2251 2166 [3]
3 Pano Skiotis 2171 2054 [2.5] : Milenko Rikalo 2011 1793 [2]
4 Scott Stewart 1926 1704 [1] : Garry Lycett 1936 1842 [1]
5 Malcolm L Pyke 2151 2078 [3.5] : Michael Baron 2329 2290 [3]
6 Ascaro Pecori 2124 2064 [1.5] : Thai Ly 2050 1859 [1.5]

Hello everyone,

The event concluded tonight, and all games were decisive in the last round.

Here are the last round results

1 Scott Stewart 1926 1704 [5] 0:1 Slobodan Krstic 2041 1837 [3.5]

6 Garry Lycett 1936 1842 [5] 1:0 Milenko Rikalo 2011 1793 [2.5]

in addition as Michael had already played his game against Domagoj in advance so Domagoj could go to Malaysia to play in the open, and Ascaro was not playing a game in this round, they played their still outstanding postponed game with the result

That's a crap result, the only ones who deserve congratulations are Domagoj, Thai, and Milenko who played all their games for their final results. The others got free points and free rides. ie not only free points since Sarah had forfeited the tournament after three rounds but also had an extra day of rest!

I am still unsure about whether Sarah Anton has chosen to rearrange her games, or remain withdrawn from the event, and as such have left the results of her games blank at this moment
The above rather rhetorical (and never officially answered) question was asked by Pyke when most of the tournament games had been completed, which is another example of dodgy organisation!

Sarah withdrawing after only 3 games was unfortunate for the tournament as a whole but I don’t think it lessens Malcolm’s impressive tournament result. He was the sole player to be undefeated, with 8 wins (one on forfeit against a lower rated player) and 3 draws.

JAK I agree that every effort should be made for all the games to be played. However, It is not Malcolm's fault that someone withdrew. It should not take anything away from Malcolm's achievement. All one can do - is try to play his best chess. And seriously....days of rest...are important..but given how long the tournament is...i do not think it was a key factor. I wish i could play all 11 games..but I played 9..some others played 10...is it our fault?

A bit harsh to withhold congratulations to Malcolm and the other seven players who didn't get the opportunity to play Sarah. I hardly think it's their fault that their games didn't occur.

Still, a valid concern has been raised about the overall tournament result. Given that Sarah played only a small portion of her games, should her games count towards either the tournament standings or for rating purposes? Of course, the only person who would be benefit would be Thai, if the three games played by Sarah were removed from the record.

I think I'm correct in thinking that the three games Sarah played don't count towards the tournament standings, but do count for rating purposes. If that is true, then Thai stays on 6.5 point, while all the other players drop a point and everyone is considered to have played 10 games, not 11. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi JAK (aka Elliott Renzies )

Well guess I am a disappointment to some people in matters still.

I will address matters with reference to specific posts. In regards to this quote

05-08-2009, 11:23 PM

I am still unsure about whether Sarah Anton has chosen to rearrange her games, or remain withdrawn from the event, and as such have left the results of her games blank at this moment

At that stage there was a very real intention from Sarah to attempt to rearrange her games, but she also was very aware of how difficult it would be to rearrange so many games. For that reason, I was not exactly sure what would eventuate in this issue.

I agree the above quote is not well phrased.

Subsequently in the post below, Sarah's games are clearly indicated as forfeits for the players she had not played.

Now in regard to your post, and your words

I guess it was very poor form of me to only win 7 games, draw 3, and accept one forfeit from someone who withdrew from the event. I am sorry my paltry effort was disappointing to you.

I might mention that I was, to the best of my knowledge, the only player to play all of their games on the scheduled day of play, though perhaps this also applies to Slobodan Krstic.

It is hard to reconcile the extra day of rest statement with this fact.

I was not the organiser of the tournament, were you aware of this? And as the organiser was your good friend ( and mine ) Marcus Raine, perhaps you should inform him of this post of yours when next you speak with him. I am sure he would be delighted to hear about his "dodgy organisation". If that is truly what you were referring to that is. I do not consider the event to have been dodgy.

I think I'm correct in thinking that the three games Sarah played don't count towards the tournament standings, but do count for rating purposes. If that is true, then Thai stays on 6.5 point, while all the other players drop a point and everyone is considered to have played 10 games, not 11. Can anyone confirm this?

Thank you for your question on this matter

Yes in regards for tournament standings, the games played by Sarah do not count towards final scores, though they are retained as data for rating purposes as FIDE requires.

If you would prefer, here is a list of standings with Sarah's results ( played or otherwise ) omitted

Well that is most of what I would say about this matter. No one wanted for Sarah to withdraw, herself included. Sarah had to take the choice to place her uni classes as more important, which seems quite sensible to me.

Those who played her were lucky to get their full compliment of games. Other players did not get this chance.

Take care and God Bless, Macavity ( Malcolm Pyke )

PS Most importantly, my very big thanks to Garry Lycett who was kind enough to drive me home last night. He is a good person, and good company. He even laughs at some of my crap jokes!

Congrats to macavity on the victory; only conceding three draws against that lineup is a very strong effort.

Players withdrawing from round-robins is a common problem. It's important to have clear procedures in place to deal with it promptly when it happens and to quickly determine and communicate that a player is out rather than leaving the matter in limbo. However sometimes situations arise that test whatever arrangements you have in this regard.

I think Sarah withdrew. Has Bob Kristic been informed that he does not need to turn up?

He gets the following answer about a week later:

I am still unsure about whether Sarah Anton has chosen to rearrange her games, or remain withdrawn from the event, and as such have left the results of her games blank at this moment

He is still unsure! No reference to the organising committee or any other decision making body or individual!

Then in the epilogue

At that stage there was a very real intention from Sarah to attempt to rearrange her games, but she also was very aware of how difficult it would be to rearrange so many games. For that reason, I was not exactly sure what would eventuate in this issue.

Not exactly sure this time! Any improvement? No! Still no word from the official organising committee / body / person. Pyke (aka maca) is The Word!

Amen!

If it has not already been done can this be sent to the CV Ratings Officer ASAP so it can be included in the ACF September Ratings.
