Dandenong Autumn Open 2009
****************************************

Hi all,

The second round contained quite a few upsets. It all started on board 1 where Manny Chua was able to hold top seed
Milenko Lojanica to a draw. Meanwhile on board 3 Phillip Drew and Don Machell quickly reached a rook and pawn ending which looked better for Phillip, although Don is very strong in endgames and I thought a draw was likely. However Phillip played the ending very well and inflicted a rare defeat on Don.

Reginald Chong showed that last weeks win over Garry Lycett was no fluke when he again defied the rating gap to defeat Rhys Hopkins. Garry Lycett showed that last weeks loss to Reginald was no fluke when he defied a rating gap of 511-points to lose to Syf Pronk. Garry made a miscalculation which Syf took full advantage of, after that Syf played very well to avoid counterplay and win the game.

John Seehusen played well to beat Habib Hessari and Ashley Mison managed to down Peter Keefe in an interesting game.

There are still 8 players on 2 / 2, with reigning club champion Mehmedalija Dizdarevic amongst them.

Following are the results for Rd2 and the pairings for Rd3

40 players entered the Autumn Open with top seed being Milenko Lojanica. Although he will have a fight on his hands, reigning club champion Mehmedalija Dizdarevic is back to play and Don Machell is in great form winning the two previous tournaments at the club. Abdulwahab Rashid and Richard Voon are two others capable of beating anyone on their night.

There is over $1,100 in prizes on offer with 5 x $75 rating prizes ensuring that most people will still be in with a chance at something in the closing rounds.

I didn't see a lot of the other games, but the first round went according to ratings, with only one big upset when Reginald Chong overcame a 421-point rating gap to defeat Garry Lycett.
Reginald has had some good results this year and played very well in this game. It was close all night and then Reginald sacrificed an exchange to get some connected passed pawns marching down the board. It was also the last game to finish, so in the closing stages there were plenty of spectators on hand to witness Garry embark on the worst plan since Abraham
Lincoln said "Let's go to the theatre tonight".

The only other game to go against ratings was when Jirair Sissian held Pezhman Ghayoori to a draw in probably his best result since joining the club.

Following are the results of Rd1 and the pairings for Rd2

After round three there are only two players remaining on 3 / 3;
Abdulwahab Rashid who won against Chris Potter, and Richard Voon who
eventually overcame a determined Richard Chong.
The two leaders will meet next week and the winner will take outright lead
into the second half of the tournament.

They are followed by six players on 2.5-points, including Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic and Matthew Potter who played a long and interesting game last
night that kept the spectators guessing. I thought Mehmedalija had the
better of the opening, but after a complicated game it was Matthew who
looked to have it won with a pawn about to queen and Mehmedalija's king
looking shaky. When all of a sudden Mehmedalija found a way to draw.

Milenko moved to 2.5-points as well by beating Pezhman Ghayoori quickly and
Manny Chua also got to 2.5-points with a long struggle to beat Rhys
Hopkins. Also on 2.5 are Phillip Drew and Miralem Campara.

Probably the biggest upset of the night was on board 7 where unrated Elvis
Espejo, while well behind in material, managed to find a perpetual against
Don Machell. After a great start to the year third seed Don Machell finds
himself languishing back on 1.5-points and may need to ask directions to
find board 9 next week, not a section he is used to playing in.

But if he does need directions he can always ask Garry Lycett, who had to
travel to board 17 to find his first win of the tournament. Despite being
rated 982-points ahead of his opponent, Henning Rasmussen, it was a long
struggle for Garry to win as Henning played quite well. Entering the game
in Fritz it showed that after 29 moves Henning retained a slight advantage,
it was only a single passed pawn that eventually brought Garry his first
point.

Following are the results for Rd3 and the pairings for Rd4.

In the fourth round Richard Voon won the top board game against Abdulwahab
Rashid to become outright leader with 4 / 4
In second place is Milenko Lojanica on 3.5-points and it should be a good
game between them next week.

They are followed by no less than 8 players in equal third with 3-points.
Amongst them is Frank Hewitt who is having an extremely good tournament,
but meets strong opposition in Matthew Potter next week.
Also on 3-points is Reginald Chong, which is more understandable as his
June 1st rating showed an increase of 224-points !!

Leading the rating groups are;
Rtg Grp A: Chris Potter, Matthew Potter, Phillip Drew, Manny Chua 3
Rtg Grp B: Pezhman Ghayoori, Mendel Armerman 2.5
Rtg Grp C: Reginald Chong 3

At the concluson of round 6 there is now a three-way tie for first place going into the 7th and final round of the tournament.
Leading going into the round, Milenko Lojanica was only able to draw with Mehmedalija Dizdarevic to get to 5 / 6. This allowed both Richard Voon and Abdulwahab Rashid to catch him after their victories against Chris Potter and Matthew Potter respectively.
Mehmedalija Dizdarevic is the only other player with a chance of equal first as he trails the leaders by only 1/2-point.
Both Don Machell and Miralem Campara took themselves out of contention for first place when they drew their game. Despite being a pawn up in an ending, and trying for a long time to win it, Don found Miralem was up to the task of holding the game.

Next week Milenko and Abdulwahab meet on board one whilst Richard and Mehmedalija meet on board two.
The winner, or equal winners, will come from this group.

The prizes to be determined next week are;
1st - $400, 2nd - $250, 3rd - $150 and 5 x $75 Rating Group prizes.
A reminder that prizes will not be shared, tie-breaks will determine final placings in the event of equal scores.
Currently Richard is leading on tie-breaks. Most players currently on 4-points would probably like both Richard and
Milenko to win next week, as Abdulwahab's current tie-break score is low enough that players who get to 5-points might pip him for the $150 third prize.

Rating Group A
By losing their games Chris and Matthew Potter allowed Manny Chua and Rhys Hopkins to join them on 4-points as equal leaders in Rating Group A as both Manny and Rhys won last night. Chris is currently leading on tie-break, but it is Rhys who got the luck of the draw. Of the four leaders only Rhys plays a lower rated player, although he shouldn't relax as he himself has the lowest tie-break of the four leaders, and Chris, Matthew and Manny are more than capable of an upset.

Rating Group B
The two leaders in this group are Pezhman Ghayoori and Mendel Armerman, both on 3.5-points. But this is a very close group, with six players chasing them on 3-points and another on 2.5-points. There were only nine players in this group and they are all with a point of each other going into the last round. As it turns out the six players on 3-points all play each other and no doubt at least one, and possibly three of them, will get to 4-points. This means Pezhman and Mendel need to win their games to win the group. Pezhman has the higher tie-break so far but is up against Reginald Chong who is in good form, Mendel plays Mirko Kudric which will also be a difficult game.

Rating Group C
Reginald Chong leads this group on 4-points, a full point ahead of Peter Pispek. Reginald has played well throughout but is perhaps fortunate that the tournament and rating groups started before the June 1st ratings were released, (which would have placed him in Group A).

Rating Group D
Frank Hewitt leads this group with 4-points, and his name can already be written on the cheque as his closest rival, Syf Pronk on 2.5-points, cannot catch him with only one round remaining. It was unfortunate for Syf and others in this group that Frank got to 4-points last night as a result of a win on forfeit. This is certainly not Frank's fault, he himself has played a reasonably strong field and performed very well. But in a tournament with rating group prizes, and tie-breaks being used, forfeits cause a lot of disruption.
I have always believed that unnotified forfeits should be rated, and if results of forfeits are accidently forwarded to the ratings officer as 0-1 instead of 0F-1F, well, I promise it was an accident.

Rating Group E
Geoff Lee has emerged as the leader on 2.5-points after he defeated equal leader going into the round, Jirrar Sissian. He is 1/2-point ahead of Henning Rasmussen. At the start of this tournament Geoff took on the extra responsibilities of opening up the club and setting up the tables, pieces etc. Along with John Seehusen, Mendel Armerman and Peter Keefe they have relieved me of this burden and it is very much appreciated. I found that doing this adversely affected my chess, but somehow it seems to have improved Geoff's chess as he doing well, and has fought hard in those games he has lost.

I was very impressed with the way R. Chong smashed me on Wednesday night
there is no doubt he is playing at 2000 strengh at the moment

Also i like to mention its been 20 years when the Dandenong Interclub team won the grand Final in C grade The team members were Phillip Warren Barry Hastings Stephen Jago(Captain) and Robert Parrot Paule Jonovic and Peter Voight rotated on board 4 The next year in B grade we were going to win back to back when Don Maciulaitis lost on time against Adrian Turner when he had to go the toilet with less then 2 min. on the clock

I can imagine how frustrating it must for Don to loose the game in this manner. Feel sorry for Don.:wall: :wall:

I was very angry last night because other players should not tell peter Keefe during the game its is a draw.M y understanding of the rule is both players have to agree to the draw.
Secondly i would like to say people dont try and get me back at the club we agreed 11 years ago that i only play in the open events. I have never ask to come back to this club Syf Pronk,Mendel Armerman,Gary Lycett,Paul Heuver and myself were the only players that night 11 years ago but i hear so many different stories. I got banned for chucking a chair into the wall after Syf refused to pay my fee to run Interschool I never made contact with Mendal

I said sorry to Mendel and Syf 11 years ago and if they forgot I am sorry

it is very funny that the dandenong club callendar that i done in the mid 1980s is still running today. So why dosnt Don Machell and his clowns change it.
Why did the club Sack Keith Jenkins from the committee after got a 5000 dollar agreement from the council. They said he didnt do his job so the quicker you let don pull the stings the club will struggle And wasnt it great to see no one play from other clubs play in the open it tells what people think of dandenong chess club

During the Topalov-Kramink "Toilet-gate" i can recall seeing a humorous cartoon at the chessbase website portraying Topalov and Kramnik playing each other while sitting on a loo... May be some chess players should bring a potty to a tournament hall with them :wall:

Dandenong Autumn Open 2009

The last round started with three players tied for the lead. Two of them,
Abdulwahab Rashid and Milenko Lojanica, agreed to an early draw on top
board, both finishing with 5.5-points. They were hoping that Mehmedalija
Dizdarevic would defeat Richard Voon and they could split the $400 first,
$250 second and $150 third prizes. But they forgot that this tournament was
not splitting the prizemoney and it would be based on tiebreak.

As it was, Richard played very well to beat Mehmedalija in the last game to
finish for the night. The win took Richard to 6-points and a well deserved
tournament victory. On tiebreaks Milenko came second and Abdulwahab third.

There were five $75 rating group prizes;

Group A
In a tight finish 4 players entered the final round on 4-points. Manny Chua
played a dubious opening against Miralem Campara and paid the price when he
blundered into a mating sacrifice. Rhys Hopkins seemed to have the better
of it against Frank Hewitt, and although he had to fight hard he eventually
won the exchange, a pawn, and finally the game. This took Rhys to 5-points
and he only had to wait and see either Chris or Matthew Potter could catch
him, both of whom would finish with higher tiebreaks. Chris was taking a
long time over his moves against Garry Lycett, and in what was certainly
not a losing position he overstepped the time control. Chris had only made
22 moves and actually had approx 4 minutes left to think about his 23rd but
became so engrossed in his thoughts that his time ran out. Matthew had a
tough opponent in Don Machell and Don appeared to have the better of it.
Just as Rhys was contemplating what to spend the money on Don overlooked a
very clever and difficult to spot mating net, Matthew won with possibly the
best finish of the tournament and took the Group A prize on tiebreak from
Rhys.
Matthew played a tough field and it was well earned award.

Group B
Mendel Armerman and Pezhman Ghayoori went into the final round leading a
group of players by only 1/2-point. Both managed to win their games,
Pezhman against Reginald Chong and Mendel against Mirko Kudric. They each
finished with 4.5-points but it was Pezhman who had clearly the higher
tiebreak and he took the money.

Group C
When the June 1st ratings came out, after the tournament had begun, it was
clear that Reginald Chong, (whose rating went from 1381 - 1605), was going
to be hard to beat. But Peter Pispek came very close, both finished on
4-points and Reginald's tiebreak was only 1/2-point ahead of Peters'.

Group D
Frank Hewitt had this one wrapped up before the round began, his 4-points
being uncatchable by others in this group. So although losing his last game
it didn't matter. Frank played a field well above his rating and did
extremely well to finish with 4.

Group E
Geoff Lee won this group with 2.5-points, he had a long wait as he had to
see whether Jirrair Sissian could defeat Masood Alikhail and catch him. In
the end Jirrair lost and Geoff was the clear winner. Second in this group
was Natalie Ang with 2-points, who despite being a piece down at one stage
conjured up a mating attack against another youngster Dimitri
Elefterijadis.

A reminder that next Wednesday 1st July is the clubs 2nd event of the
Lightning Championship, and the week after, July 8th the Grades Tournaments
will commence. These are 8-player round robins with players grouped
according to rating.

Following is the final round results and the final standings with
tiebreaks.
