Saturday Night Blitz was small but hotly contested tonight.

Only 4 players decided to play so we made it a 4 game round robin. The results were:

M. Baron 10.5
C .Kolak 7
C. Gorka 6.5
J. MacCauley 0

So Michael won the small event, but the real winner was James MacCauley, one of our newer members who got to play 12 games against strong players. No wonder he is fast improving:)

So come on and have some fun for a few hours at the MCC on a Saturday night.

Next event, next Saturday 30th May at 7pm. Just $5 for members and $10 for non members.

9 players turned up for the Blitz this Saturday, meaning we could run a single round robin tournament. Players of all standards competed in this friendly event. It was encouraging to see 2 juniors playing, but it would be good to see more. The merits of blitz for improving your overall chess have been debated for years, but recently I saw Robert Jamieson write that he felt huge amounts of blitz chess when he was younger contributed to his reaching the level he got to.

Results:

1. M.Baron 7/8
2. C Kolak 6.5
3. M Beaumont 6
4 T Tosevski 5
4 C Gorka 5
6 A Fletcher 4
7 M Tanner 2
8 B Tosevski 1
9 J Puccini 0

I gave out 2 sets of prizes, 100% of entries being given back to the players.
Michael Baron and Chris Kolak won prizes from the top group, while Tony Tosevski and Andrew Fletcher won prizes from the bottom half of the tournament.

A number of the players said they enjoyed the event and would be back. Why not come along and see whats so good about the Saturday night Blitz at the MCC? Next tournament Saturday 6th June starting 7pm. It costs just $5 for MCC members and $10 for non members, great value for a couple of hours of fun:)

Only 6 players for the Blitz this week, leading to a double round robin.

1. M. Baron 9.5/10
2. A. Fletcher 7
2. C. Gorka 7
4. J. Shanks 3
5. Frank Lekkas 2.5
6. S. Karumbi 1

More fun next week when we will have no weekender to compete with, and we will be looking forward to the next prepared line of Grant Szuveges in his pre tournament games versus Michael Baron ;)

The MCC is proud to announce that a sponsorship has been secured for the Saturday Blitz Tournaments, starting at the beginning of July. The Sponsor will give $100 to each tournament for 6 months depending on 10 players participating. Should 20 players participate the sponsor will give $200 per event.

This will continue through till Christmas, and the Blitz tournaments from July will form a Grand Prix, the details of which are to be announced soon.

The first sponsored Blitz at the MCC took place on Saturday 4th July. The sponsor has offered $100 for each 10 players who participate up to $300 in total. So if 10-19 players play, we will get $100, 20-29 will get $200, and above 30 players we will get $300. A very generous offer indeed.:)

The first sponsored blitz saw 12 players participating, and a very close event it proved to be.

1. M. Baron 10/11
2. J. Jager 9
2. C. Gorka 9
2. B. Jordan 9
5. M. Raine 7
6. C. Kolak 6.5
7. F. Lekkas 4.5
8. J. Shanks 3.5
8. A. Dale 3.5
10. J. Puccini 2
11. F. Dale 1
11. A. Hicks 1

The prizes were split inot 2 sections, a top half and a bottom half. So Michael Baron won 1st prize of $50, while Jesse, Bill and myself shared the 2nd-3rd prizes.

Frank Lekkas won his section while Jack Shanks and Victorian U-12 Champ Ari Dale shared 2nd.

Good...
I hope that 1st prize for GP will be higher than the junior group C prize :).

Last week's participants include: 4 2000+ players as well as Victorian U12 champion! Next week - It may also include Victoria's top female player and another superstrong junior!

Also for those who are worried about starving to death ...there is a dinner break between allegro and blitz. Furthermore, MCC has a lot of delicious snacks (and even soup available). If you are as crazy about eating healthy as I am - here is a special note - the soup is 97% fat free (and $1 only!)

A very good turn out of 17 players meant that the blitz was an 11 round swiss for the first time. Again it was strong at the top with 2 FM's playing, and again it was fun throughout with virtually everyone having a chance of winning a prize. For the second week in a row, we received $100 sponsorship for the event:)

1-2 Baron, Michael 2213 10.5
Bill, Jordan 2264 10.5
3-4 Kolak, Chris 1890 8
Gorka, Carl 2041 8
5 Karumbi, Simon 1568 7
6-10 Dale, Ari 1550 6
Stone, Ian 1818 6
Lekkas, Frank 1602 6
Tosevski, Tony 1680 6
Anton, Sarah 1503 6
11-13 Puccini, Jack 1341 5
Dale, Finlay 842 5
Jose, Wilfredo 1367 5
14 Hicks, Andy 1480 4
15 Warren, Elizabeth 1183 3
16 Grgurevic, Peter 2
17 Watson, Joshua 713 1

The tournament was split into 3 rating groups, Open, U-1800, and U-1500. FM's Michael Baron and Bill Jordan shared first, and prizes of $50 and $30. First in U-1800 was Simon Karumbi with an excellent 7/11 and he received $30. First place in the Under 1500 was shared by talented juniors Jack Puccini, Finlay Dale, and talented not quite so junior Jose Wilfredo:D They each received $10.

The atmosphere at the MCC on a Saturday is great, there is competition for everyone from beginners to masters, so we urge everyone to make their way down and try out our Saturday tournaments:)

Next Blitz, Saturday 18th July, about 7-7.30pm

A field of 14 showed up for the weekly blitz though one player was called into work early and could only play the first few rounds. Still a large round robin robin was played with lots of upsets throughout the event. The biggest upset was saved for the last round when Michael Tanner "tricked" Michael Baron to gain his biggest scalp to date. There is little doubt that the juniors are getting tougher to beat for the more experienced players at these Saturday rapid time control events.

1 Carl Gorka 2041 12.5
2 Michael Baron 2220 11.5
3 Chris Kolak 1885 11
4-5 Ian Stone 1797 8.5
Andrew Fletcher 1771 8.5
6 Michael Tanner 1033 8
7 Simon Karumbi 1573 7
8 Ari Dale 1517 6
9 Frank Lekkas 1594 5
10 Finlay Dale 927 4
11-13 Jack Puccini 1350 3
Deniz Tuncer 1185 3
Elizabeth Warren 1175 3

Next Blitz event will be held next Saturday, 1st August starting about 7-7.30pm depending on the finishing time of the allegro. Be there by 7pm and you won't miss it :)

Another good turn out for the blitz this week saw new member Justin Tan playing his first MCC blitz alongside Club President FM Grant Szuveges. But bouncing back after last week, Michael Baron came through strongly to take first place.:)

1 Baron, Michael 2204 fm 9
2-3 Gorka, Carl 2048 7
Tan, Justin 1965 7
4-5 Szuveges, Grant 2129 fm 6

Thanks to those who turned up, but this is an event that needs support. Our sponsorship deal still stands, but without 10 players, there is no extra prize fund:(

Final standings tonight:

1 Michael Baron 2197 9.5
2 Carl Gorka 2041 8.5
3 Chris Kolak 1897 5.5
4-5 Ari Dale 1533 3

Another Saturday evening, another MCC Blitz, another victory for FM Michael Baron. Michael proved unstoppable today, with late entrant Andrew Fletcher also putting up a good showing to finish second.

10 players participated which meant our sponsor provided an extra $100 to the prize fund. If only more people came off their computers to play some live blitz, we would get even more.

Final results:

1 Michael Baron 2148 fm 9
2 Andrew Fletcher 1741 7.5
3 Tony Tosevski 1641 7
4 Carl Gorka 2048 5.5

A small but evenly matched blitz happened last night at the MCC. We played a time handicap which brought all players closer together, with perhaps the exception of Justin Tan who was in excellent form. The handicap saw players within 200 rating points playing 5-5 games, 200-400 rating difference 4-6 games, 400-600 rating difference 3-7 games and 600+ 2-8 games. Although thye table still favours the stronger players, every game was very close and even Michael Baron succumbed to the pressure, losing one of his 2-8 games against Finlay Dale:clap:

1 Justin Tan 1951 7
2-3 Michael Baron 2151 fm 5
Carl Gorka 2041 5
4-6 Finlay Dale 1098 3

A reminder to everyone that we need your support to
a. keep this great event going!
b. to milk the sponsor for $100 a week!

We haven't been able to gather the required 10 players recently to achieve the sponsorship, so come along, support this great event, support MCC, and most importantly, have fun playing some blitz with players of all rating levels ranging from FM Baron to the juniors rated under 1000!

There was a great Blitz tournie on tonight at the MCC, with 8 players participating. We all knew it was going to be a good one when Dave Beaumont claimed there was something in the air which told him Michael wouldn't win, which he didn't!

Chris Kolak took the win with 13 points in a strong field made up of: Baron, Lekkas, Cavezza, Kolak, Voon, Beaumont, Tosevski and Dave (sorry forgotten your last name!)

I think Blitz will be held on a Saturday now starting around 7pm, though somebody will confirm that.
