TOURNAMENT RULES AND ENTRY CONDITIONS

1. The Championships will be ACF and QJRL rated.
2. All 2009 FIDE Laws of Chess will be enforced.
3. If a player’s mobile phone produces a sound in the playing venue during play, that player shall lose the game.
4. Outright money prizes will be shared.
5. Players must be rated over 1699 on the June 2009 ACF rating list, or meet criteria 7, 8 or 9.
6. Since July 1st 2008, entrants must have played not less than seven ACF rated games in open tournaments approved by Chess Association of Queensland.
7. 2008 Queensland Champion shall have right of entry (Tony Truscott).
8. 2009 Queensland Junior Champion shall have right of entry (To Be Decided).
9. 2008 Queensland Minor Champion shall have right of entry (Brodie McClymont).
10. Should a vacancy occur at the commencement of the event, the vacancy shall be filled by the highest-rated available reserve or, if no reserves are available, by the highest-rated available entrant to the Queensland Minor Championship.
11. In the event of a tie for first, playoffs will be held at a time and venue to be arranged by CAQ Council.

There have been some important recent changes to the FIDE Laws of Chess.

6.6a) Any player who arrives at the chessboard after the start of the session shall lose the game. Thus the default time is 0 minutes. The rules of a competition may specify otherwise.

The forfeit time for the Queensland Championship is thirty minutes.

12.2 Players are not allowed to leave the 'playing venue' without permission from the arbiter. The playing venue is defined as the playing area, rest rooms, refreshment area, area set aside for smoking and other places as designated by the arbiter. The player having the move is not allowed to leave the playing area without permission of the arbiter.

12.3 b) Without the permission of the arbiter, a player is forbidden to have a mobile phone or other electronic means of communication in the playing venue, unless they are completely switched off. If any such device produces a sound, the player shall lose the game. The opponent shall win. However, if the opponent cannot win the game by any series of legal moves, his score shall be a draw.

12.6 It is forbidden to distract or annoy the opponent in any manner whatsoever. This includes unreasonable claims, unreasonable offers of a draw or the introduction of a source of noise into the playing area.

13.7 b) Unless authorised by the arbiter, it is forbidden for anybody to use a mobile phone or any kind of communication device in the playing venue and any contiguous area designated by the arbiter.

Hi Garvin

When will the draw be finalised for each round if it is a swiss ?

Also - in case anyone was interested in clarifications I sought earlier (correct me if I misunderstand Garvin) :-

* There will be no players under 1700 allowed to play apart from the three players exempted.

* If there are less than 10 players it will be a round robin.

* If there are too few players for nine rounds the Saturday round would go first and then the November rounds.

* It is not FIDE rated.

cheers
Garrett.

I'm a bit surprised to see this tournament, as I thought CAQ had resolved to hold Open and Championship in alternating years.

Saying that, the event looks good.

How much notice is required for the half point byes? Do they have to be nominated at time of entry or is more flexibility alowed?

How much notice is required for the half point byes? Do they have to be nominated at time of entry or is more flexibility alowed?

Interesting question. If no-more than ten players enter it would seem to indicate a round-robin.

I'm a bit surprised to see this tournament, as I thought CAQ had resolved to hold Open and Championship in alternating years. The basic format of one round per day was decided by the clubs that attended the 2008 CAQ AGM.

How much notice is required for the half point byes? Do they have to be nominated at time of entry or is more flexibility allowed?More flexibility will be allowed, but it will be on a case by case basis. The earlier the player nominates for a half point bye, the more likely it will be granted.

Interesting question. If no-more than ten players enter it would seem to indicate a round-robin.
If we receive ten entries and have received a couple of half point bye requests, then council will probably have to discuss whether to keep it the tournament as a nine round round robin event or make it a seven round swiss.

It is highly likely that if we have received a couple of half point bye requests at the start of the tournament, then there may be more coming later on, so with 'only' ten players, making a seven round swiss might be easier than having re-schedules or forfeits.

When will the draw be finalised for each round if it is a swiss ?About three days before the start of the next round.

Also - in case anyone was interested in clarifications I sought earlier (correct me if I misunderstand Garvin) :-

* There will be no players under 1700 allowed to play apart from the three players exempted.Correct

* If there are less than 10 players it will be a round robin.CAQ Council will discuss whether to go with ten player round robin or seven round swiss.

* If there are too few players for nine rounds the Saturday round would go first and then the November rounds.Correct.

* It is not FIDE rated.Correct due to fide regulation that the tournament must be completed within ninety days of the start date. If we get a strong enough field that we can make it a norm tournament, then we may try and re-arrange 'things' somehow to make it fide rateable, which then means norms are available.

To be a norm tournament you would also need to change the time control.Wouldn't we only need to change the time control if we require two rounds in a day, to get under 12 hours in a day rule?

So we would go with 40/90 fb 30 etc.

Bill Gletsos

Wouldn't we only need to change the time control if we require two rounds in a day, to get under 12 hours in a day rule?No even at one round a day your quoted time control of 40 moves in 80 minutes, followed by 40 minutes, with 1 minute per move added from move one. isnt acceptable for a norm event.

See post here (http://www.chesschat.org/showpost.php?p=234936&postcount=1) with valid norm time controls.

With your entry, that doubles the number :uhoh: .

1. David Castor
2. George Lester

Nope. Ok with Yi that now makes four.

1. David Castor (free entry)
2. Tony Truscott (paid)
3. Yi Liu (awaiting payment)
4. George Lester. (awaiting payment)

Sheesh, we may actually get enough to make a field  :uhoh:

Current state of play.

We now have five.

No Name Rtg Loc

1. CASTOR, David 2194 2042
2. TRUSCOTT, Tony J 2076 1887
3. LESTER, George E 1836 1793
4. LIU, Yi 1935 1711
5. STEVENS, Ryan 1711

While I am not speaking officially at this point in time, it is highly likely that if we do not receive enough entries and decide to change format, those who have entered before the closing date (Sunday July 12) will receive refunds and will receive free entry to whatever changed format CAQ Council decides upon.

Only those who have paid their entry fee before the cut off date will possibly be eligible.

Of course if we do not receive enough entries and decide to cancel the event, refunds will be given.

Unfortunately due to personal circumstances Nik Stawski has withdrawn.

With the withdrawal of Nik Stawski, this has a number of affects on the Championship.

1) As Nik had played 50% of his allocated games (4/8), the results from his completed games remain in the tournament table and forfeits wins are allocated to his opponents.

Fide regulations on withdrawals from round robins:

06.11 Fide tournament rules
(c) When a player withdraws or is expelled from a round-robin tournament, the effect shall be as follows:
(d) If a player has completed less than 50% of his games, his score remains in the tournament table (for rating and historical purposes), but the points scored by him or against him are not counted in the final standings. The unplayed games of the player and his opponents are indicated by (-) in the tournament table and those of his opponents by (+). If neither player is present this will be indicated by two (-).
(e) If a player has completed at least 50% of his games, his score shall remain in the tournament table and shall be counted in the final standings. The unplayed games of the player are shown as indicated as above.

2) The games already played are still rated, but the games not played are not counted for ratings.

3) Obviously Nik's opponents now do not have to turn up on the days they were allocated to play Nik.

The tournament table now looks like this.

Curious as to why the tournament has ten rounds with two byes apiece for nine players.
It is still a single round robin, just due to some players unavailability it is being played over ten days. I have had to move games around to fit in with different players availability and some of these notices have come after the first days play.

So really the table is showing ten days, not ten rounds, if that can be understood.

Makes sense, for instance by splitting one round into two days then juggling a few other games.

With 3 games still remaining to be played in the final round tomorrow, two players are still in contention.

Ben Lazarus as black against David Castor needs 'only' a draw to secure the 2009 Queensland Championship. However, if he should lose and Bruce Williams was to win against Tony Truscott as white, then they would be tied on 6.5 and we would be off to playoffs.

Congratulations to Ben Lazarus who is the new Queensland Champion. Ben thoroughly deserved his victory, performing a class above the field over the tournament.

Unfortunately for the second year running, the tournament victor received a forfeit win in the final round. It is fair to say that the rest of the entrants at the venue today were less than impressed. David did ring me a couple of hours later to explain his no show and was deeply apologetic.

A report will be made to CAQ Council.

The right way of punishing this one, playing 5.cxd5 before Qb3. Capa managed to get away with the bad 4... Bf5, e.g. in this famous victory over Janowski (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1064780), but Torre punished Gotthilf in Moscow 1925 (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1100052). In the above game, 12.Bc3 Bxb3 (or else Nd2) 13.e4 would roughly transpose, whereas 12.e3 allowed Black to get away with it. A few years later, Capa recaptured with 5... Nxd5 and drew with Spielmann (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1130898).

I was out of book after 4... Bf5 and was on my own.

Good enough for a surprise weapon, Solo was on hand for the post-mortem (thanks for that Solo ! :) ) and demonstrated a recent game of his from New Zealand with this line.

Cheers
Garrett.

Agreed, Ben played very well and thoroughly deserved his victory.

I thought it was a bit disappointing for both Ben and Bruce, whom I also thought played very well and has either improved recently or started showing his true colours.

David did ring me a couple of hours later to explain his no show and was deeply apologetic.

Undoubtedly. Wasn't that his second no-show? Is this explanation available to the other participants ?
