We had a pretty good turn out on Thursday for Round 1. It's great to see some new players and also some players from the Khalifman who have now joined the club. It's also great of course to see the regulars! I'll post the provisional pairings when they are known.

Thanks for the info Jean and what a nice website it is! Very well presented and maintained with lots of useful information! Highlight (amongst other interesting features) the games section where one can find lots of interesting encounters from the Club's tournaments! Keep up the good work!

Provisional pairings for round #2 are now published. Special thanks to Watto for stepping up to help avoid the bye this round. I'm in an unfortunate situation of having to carry a support mobile phone virtually 24-7 at present (well, 8am-11pm every day) so I'm not able to play chess at all at the moment. Hopefully, when my 3-month probationary period is over at work, I will be able to negotiate a more equitable/balanced solution and at least have Thursdays and one day at the weekends off.

Thanks for the nice comments, JAK and Gunner. Yes, I have to agree, it's a great website and credit for its creation and maintenance must go to Steve Frost, otherwise known as The Snail King (Croydon's ex President and current Treasurer.) Thinking about it, the tournament directors also do a great job in providing the results promptly and supplying all the games; in my time they have been Dougy Stones, NY Wong and now, Ian Birchall.

That's okay, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.
That work requirement woud be most unfortunate for anyone, but especially for a chessplayer. :( Hope you do manage to negotiate a little more phone-free time...

Here's an interesting game from round 2. Ian Birchall, our tournament director, describes this game as follows: “Black gives up a pawn for a dangerous initiative, then sacrifices a piece to continue the attack on his opponent's king. White defends desperately, and has opportunities to equalise or gain the advantage (19. cxb!), but finally succumbs under time pressure (1min 20 sec left at move 20). Another very aggressive game from Jamie Cross.” Here's the game.

Here's the round 3 game between Jamie Cross and Richard Goldsmith. Ian Birchall describes it as “An instructive game between young Jamie Cross and Club President - Richard Goldsmith. The 'Pres' blunts Jamie's attack against his Sicilian Dragon, then proceeds to 'show who's boss' in the rook endgame.”

Here's the game, with notes by Ian.

Here are the round 4 results. Unfortunately, we had a few withdrawals, including Marcel Rothlisberger, for personal reasons. So the anticipated clash between Birchall and Marcel did not take place.

On the plus side, I'm told that Croydon CC member, Pearl Yung, won her first game against a rated player. I must admit I thought she'd already done that in Interclub last year but perhaps not. Either way, Go Pearl!

Here's Ian Birchall's game against Jamie Cross. In Ian's words:
"White gains the advantage from the opening when Back's queenside development is slowed. Black is under pressure, and White gives up a pawn (wrongly?) to try to keep him there. With much of the tactics hidden in the side variations, fortunes in the game fluctuate, and each player misses winning lines [14. Re6! 21. Bg5! are two for White and 18...Bxd5 and 27....g4 are two for Black). Eventually, Black succumbs to the pressure exerted by the clock and a pesky passed pawn."

Thanks for the update Jean!
It's nice to see my friends Bruce Simpson and Vladimir Zacharczenko playing tournament chess again!
For some extra info, Vladimir is a very good artist with a tremendous amount of quality work and Bruce a real talent in sound engineering and studio recording production!
So with Jean, Vladimir, Bruce and who knows how many other talented members, Croydon Chess Club can rightfully be classified as an artistic haven as well as a very successful Chess Club!
